Introduction :

Non-narcotic substance xylazine, also known as xylazine HCl Injection, has sedative, analgesic, and muscle-relaxing properties. Its calming and analgesic effects have a connection to depression of the central nervous system. Its ability to relax muscles is predicated on the central nervous system's intraneural impulse transmission being inhibited. In horses and Cervidae, the main pharmacological effects appear 10 to 15 minutes after intramuscular injection, while in horses, they appear 3 to 5 minutes after intravenous treatment.

Analgesia lasts from 15 to 30 minutes, while a sleep-like condition, the depth of which is dose-dependent, is typically maintained for 1 to 2 hours. The skeletal musculature is relaxed as a result of the centrally acting muscle relaxant action, which supports sedation and analgesia.

When Xylazine HCl Injection (xylazine) is administered to horses and other cervids, the respiratory rate is lowered similar to that of a sound sleep. The heart rate is reduced after receiving Xylazine HCl Injection (xylazine), and a temporary alteration in the conductivity of the cardiac muscle may happen, as shown by a partial atrioventricular block. This is similar to the atrioventricular block frequently seen in healthy horses.  1,2,3,4 Partial A-V block may occasionally occur following intramuscular injection of Xylazine HCl Injection (xylazine). Horses are more likely to experience partial A-V block when given intravenously. Horses' blood pressure briefly rises after intravenous injection, then gradually drops.

Side Effects :

When administered at recommended dosage levels in horses and other cervids, xylazine HCl Injection (xylazine) may infrequently result in mild muscle tremors, bradycardia with partial A-V block, and a decreased respiratory rate. It is possible to see movement in reaction to abrupt aural inputs.

Following administration, there have been reports of perspiration in horses—rarely excessive sweating. Salivation, different vocalisations (bellowing, bleating, moaning, grunting, snoring), audible molar grinding, protruding tongue, and higher temperatures have also occasionally been observed in Cervidae.

Precautions :

Before administering, horses and other Cervidae with greatly reduced respiration, severe pathologic heart disease, advanced liver or kidney illness, severe endotoxic or traumatic shock, or stress-related situations including excessive heat, cold, altitude, or weariness should be carefully considered.

Do not use Xylazine HCl Injection (xylazine) in conjunction with tranquilizer.

Prior to surgical or therapeutic treatments, the analgesic impact should be carefully assessed because it can vary. The distal extremities of horses and other cervids are where analgesia variability is most common. Even when the patient is sedated, the practitioner and handlers should exercise cautious because defence reactions could not be lessened.
